It’s 2010, so you should read this.

We have made so much progress not only as a country but as a species. Personally, my favorite part about America is that everyone can have, and DOES have different opinions, but they all can coincide. Or at least, that’s the idea of it.

Everyone grows up with different views built into them. Some more extreme than others, these morals and ethics and opinions shape us into the people we become, and dictate the people that we will surround ourselves with later in life.

The word opinion connotes that it cannot be proven; that there is no legiitmate fact behind the statement that can prove it’s truth or falsity. And yet, people all over seem to think that their opinions are facts.

Personally, I’m very supportive of gay rights, and I don’t get surprised when I hear on the news about all the suicides. If someone refused to give me human rights, I would probably feel pretty lost in this world too. I’m often horrified at the lack of respect that the LGBT community receives.

That being said, I have MANY religious friends who think that homosexuality is a sin, and that gay marriage should not be legalized. In these situations and conversations I usually employ the concept of the American “Melting Pot”. Our opinions from each culture mix and blend until we all come up with one grand scheme that will eventually solve world peace hunger and social problems (that’s the idea, right?)

In my opinion, and this has to do with all topics- not just gay rights, the crime is not believing something different, no matter how devoutly. The real violation of the human code is believing that YOU have the ONLY correct opinion. If we want to survive as humans, friends, and maybe even ambassadors, we need to learn to work together. It’s pathetic to cut people out of your life because they happen to have a different view on something that you do. Real strength comes from questioning why that person feels that way, and trying to understand their view. That doesn’t mean we all have to convert to whatever belief our friends have, we just need to learn that a little tolerance can be a good thing.

I just watched this video and learned all about that crazy lady and her church. It’s not her view that make me truly ill (even though they do) it’s her closed mind. She’s so ignorant to the rest of the world. It’s really sad.

So yes, I support gay rights, I don’t know where I stand on abortion, and I think taxes could probably be raised; we’re pretty broke as a nation. But I’m not gonna get mad when my followers post things that contradict those ideals. I don’t want to make people feel like they need to censor themselves and likewise I hope that no one will unfollow because of these opinions.

Because that’s all they are.

Opinions.
